If you file the nocks you reduce or get rid of the plastic throat that gives the faint click when you nock an arrow. The manufacturer puts this on their nocks for a reason! Also filing nocks is a one way street, take to much off and you have no way back. If your really retentive it also reduces the weight of each arrow depending on how much you take off.

If you crimp the string you could damage the strands under the string and if you squash the string to much you will have loose nocks with no way back.

If you play around with serving thickness it takes for ever to get it right and then the serving beds in and you need to pack the nocking point with dental floss. So all that time getting the serving right was wasted.

The best way is to dip the nock (with it attached to the arrow) up to just past the bottom of the slot in warm (not hot water) for about 10 seconds then take out and insert a round wire (watch makers screw drivers or something similar) of the required diameter to gently open up the nock. This method can also be used to close up loose nocks, but use your fingers to gently squash the nock not pliers or teeth! This way you keep the throat, you dont damage the string, you dont end up with half a spool of floss on the string and no it doesnt weaken the nock any more than shooting them on a hot sunny day.

Using this method allows you get the fit perfect on every arrow which is essential if you want the best chance of hitting what your aiming at.

Good luck

BE's statement should have ended this thread. (refreshingly frank, and absolutely right btw!)

if they dont fit, don't break 'em. make/get a suitable string

if one of my nocks was unfortunate enough to fall in some hot water, or accidentally rub against some sandpaper, i would certainly replace it with a new one immediately

Your opinion maybe Have a good look at a plasti-nock for a wood shafted arrow and tell me honestly that a couple swipes with sandpaper is in any way going to ruin it. I did it to mine today and I can assure you I will sleep well tonight

Cheers

BE's statement should have ended this thread. (refreshingly frank, and absolutely right btw!) Glad to know that no-one else is entitled to an opinion, because you agree with someone.

if they dont fit, don't break 'em. make/get a suitable string

if one of my nocks was unfortunate enough to fall in some hot water, or accidentally rub against some sandpaper, i would certainly replace it with a new one immediately Yeah, OK, right.
Way to put an opinion accross. Prick.

The trouble with 'Make/Get a suitable string' is that unless you have enough experience of string material diameters, serving materials, correctly tensioning serving etc... & the time & patience it takes to learn these things, you won't know whether it's right for your nocks until it's made! Let's be honest. A slack handful of nocks costs what, a couple of quid? Right. Sand 'em, heat 'em & bend 'em, do whatever the hell you like with them. I've yet to have a nock break on me & I've sanded every single one I've shot!
(Oh & incedentally, that ain't from 35# longbows with jumbo-24 strand B50 neither. More like 70#+ High performance american longbows with 16 strand 8125 strings shooting Beman MFX arrows. You know, the ones with the tiny nocks!) By sanding or bending your nocks, you can tailor your own preffered, exact fit. Safely, quickly & easily.

grow up you tard
if you shoot such nice stuff, why handicap yourself by making all your nocks individually different?

manufacturers put loads of effort into getting them all the same (you know Beiter nocks of a certain type/size all come from a single mould).

as was said before by someone else, you've made sure each of your shots will go differently before you even set foot on the range

Well here we go. things are getting a bit testy. First thing I suggest is if this goes any further monkey you expose yourself and tell us who you actually are. ie first and last name etc.. Then we can have a proper debate where we are are all held accountable for what we say.

Yes LMP, if I have transgressed the posting rules of the forum I apologise. Getting back to the issue at hand let's see some hard data to prove some of the bold statements made against nock modification please.
