What Spine Do You Use ?

Am hoping to make some extra wooden arrows to sell here - but I use 35 - 40 lb spine.

I think thats probably a bit light for most people so wonder if all you could tell me what the most common spine weight is that you use - market research I think you would call it !

Would be grateful for any information re flights, points etc as well as the preferred type of wood and shaft size.

Hope you'll all help

I'm in the minority, but mine are 95# spine, lol.

Your biggest problem is going to be postage, the majority (but by no means all) of the member's on this board are outside France. Especially in the UK we will get hit by import duty and carriage costs.

There are no import duties if you are purchasing items from inside the EU as I understand it.

To be honest Karen, you can't really generalise about arrow spine. It's always going to be different for each individual archer. If you took 10 people shooting exactly the same bow at exactly the same AMO draw-weight, yu'd still need 10 different spines to cover differences in drawlength/point weight etc...
With bows ranging from 18-80# regularly in use (& a few either side of that as well!) a good comprehensive range of shafts would be essential. I would guess that most folks would require arrows in the 35-60# spine range, guessing that that would cover ELBs from 30-70#, flatbows fom 35-65# & recurves from 30-50# wth a variety of pile weights from 60 to 125gn.

I'm not particulary thinking of exporting to UK as I think theres plenty of expert arrow makers already there, though its no more costly than selling in France as postage is the same price for both - in fact it is cheaper to post to UK than it is to France quite often.
I'm just looking to find a reasonably saleable starting spine - I guess between 45 - 50 lbs could be a fairly common one.
I just wondered if all you trad shooters could tell me what spine you actually use so that I would know if I was too far out.

Still interested to know the type of wood shafts as well.

Karen if it helps. I recently ordered some made up woodies from KG Archery for the Atlanta flatbow I purchased from them. Bow spec is 46# @ 28". I requested a 29 1/2" arrow for my 28 1/2" draw length. They suggested a 5/16" POC 40/45lb spine with 100 grain points.

Hi Karen. I have made far too many arrows this year and my other half has finally worked out how many there are... guess I will have to be content with modifying existing ones for a while.

I draw 28" and make the arrows 28.5" from nock slot to the shoulder of the pile. My bow is 52# @ 28". I have arrows ranging from 40/45# spine to 50/55#, from 63 to 125 grain points, from 2.5" to 5" fletchings and in both 5/13" and 11/32". I have used pine, sitka spruce and Point Orford Cedar. Some of my sets have a rear taper on them.

They all have their own personalities and specialities and different sets suit at different times depending on how my shooting is going. My current fantasy is to have three sets, one for each distance of the York round, made in such a way that the sight picture is near enough identical at each.

Reading postings on here I think that this is all down to personal preference and you will be lucky to find a general purpose formula that will suit a lot archers straight away. And for me experimenting has been huge fun!

Good luck!

Hi Karen

I make and sell between 5 and 10 sets of arrows each week and I have found the most popular spine to be 35/40 and 45/50, don't forget you can use different weight points to stiffen or weaken the spine to a certain degree. I do carry a stock of alll spines from 25 up to 110 as you do get the quite a variety of bow poundages, but as starting point get some 35/40 and 45/50

hope that helps

James
