bow backing glue???? Hello Im about to make a lemonwood longbow, backed with a bamboo strip. I am unsure which glue i should be using to glue the backing on with. I have the Traditional Bowyers bible, but the glues mentioned in there are listed under american names. Does anyone know what type of glue I should be using to glue the backing on with? I asked richard head longbows, who i brought my stave from, but they would not give me any information. I am also aware that its important to apply even clamping pressure to the backing and stave while the glue is setting. Many thanks for you help David

Bow makers in my club use Casamite ( I think its also known as Extramite). Its a powered resin glue thats mixed with water. Best of luck with the bow building. Mark Huff
glues Hello mate try this lot. www.flybowshop.com.They are very helpful and have every thing you'll need. On glues "Urac" seems to be recommended as the best but its a two part glue. For a less hassel verson "Titebond 3" is a really strong wood glue and will do the jjob fine. Good luck mate and post some photos when your done.

This stuff is awesome, but you have to be quick so plan wisely and measure the glue by weight not volume.

Cascamite/extramite is the stuff you want to use. in terms of clamping; lots of people wrap with elastic bands or a long tyre inner tube. I think if you do this though - wrap with cellophane first. I've only made the one bow - which was a lemonwood bow; without a back. Have fun! Dave

| Cellophane? Cascamite, now called Extramite, is a synthetic resin glue which is waterproof when set. It comes in powder form and is mixed with water to make a useable paste. Put lots of glue onto the items to be joined, but put as little as possible between the glue and the air as the water the powder is mixed with has to be got rid of. Anything waterproof between the glue and air will just extend the time the glue takes to "go off". To join the backing to the stave whilst the glue is setting, I used an old tractor inner tube cut as a spiral to form a long strip of rubber approximately 1.5 inches (3.73cm) wide, wrapped along the whole joined stave. When the glue is set, the rubber breaks away from the glue quite easily and is ready for use in the next bow construction. Do give the glue a couple of days to go off properly before taking off the rubber wrapping, and starting work on the stave.

thankyou all of you, very helpful. I will look for the cascamite/extramite or polymite then. I have used the inner tubes before, i think i still have a good amount of inner tubing around, i will make sure i plan carefully before i put any glue on. cheers dave.
