Pronunciation of osage

I've always assumed that "osage" is pronounced "o-sah-geh" (i.e. with a hard G) since it's a Native American word. Or rather an Anglicisation of a Frenchification of a Native American word. But recently I've heard several longbow shooters and a longbow maker pronounce it "oh-saij" (i.e. with a soft G).

Anyone know which is the correct way, please?

I think it's the later "osayj".

Talking

When in doubt just call it hedge apple. That being the other American name for it.

I'd prefer to think of it as "ossage" - like "sausage", without the first 's'.

Bough is easy to pronounce, it rhymes with cough,
or is it plough,
or is it slough
or is it thought,
or is it rough,
or is it dough,
or is it hiccough,
or is it Scarborough,
or is it through
etc,etc
