Indoor shooting

Going shooting indoors for the first time this season tomorrow night and thought I would try to tap into the collective wisdom on this. Specifically; if you shoot indoors, do you use a different bow? Not sure recurvers change bows for indoors, although I think compounders may have a different set up? If I change to my lighter bow I worry about losing muscle condition, but last season suggested I could be more precise with the lighter bow. What do other people do and why?

I just change from thin carbons to thick Ali's. I may check the bareshaft tuning incase a little bit of tweaking is needed, but nothing more.

For the first couple of indoor sessions this winter I went back to shooting my ally's rather than my ACC's that I had shot with most of the summer. Rubbish. They just didn't 'feel' right. I tried a bare shaft test and they were pretty well within my grouping, but I was getting more reds than golds.

The last session this week I went back to my ACC's and I feel much more comfortable with them and either because of that or maybe they really are better tuned, I scored much better and got a PB Portsmouth (527).

I'm sticking with my ACC's. Other than that my bow is set up exactly as it was all summer.

looking at the fact this thread is in "Traditional Archery", and your bow set up is a Bickerstaffe, then I'm assuming that all the recurvers that answer this thread aren't paying attention?

FWIW I change to fat ally's for indoors, as I dont want to wreck expensive carbons, and then accomodate for the weaker spine by winding out my sights by a couple of turns. One day I'll get round to using an indoor button too.

But all of that is somewhat academic really, seeing as you're asking about Trad bows?!

I use the same bow indoors and out.
For two reasons,

one - I can't afford two bows
two - If I'm not accurate with a heavier bow, then there is no point trying to hit something 100 yards away which is more difficult than shooting 20 yards.

Kae.

Yes - I have a purely bare-shaft at 18m tuned bow.

And different arrows. Just in case they break. (Carbons still)

Although I haven't shot longbow indoors yet with my success out doors I will be using my 30lb bow with 4 maybe 5" feathers indoors.

outdoors i use my 45lb'er mostly with 4" feathers for less than sixty yards and 2 1/2" feathers for further.

I have just made some really lovely arrows that I glued the feathers on helical style and they fly soooooo straight its unbeleivable so I 'm gonna do the same for indoors. By the way I am selling the same style of arrow on eBay check out shop 'Farrarchers'. web site to follow )

So my choice for indoors will be 30lb bickerstaffe with 25-30 spine POC's with 125piles with most likely 5" helical feathers and I will just see how that goes.

As for muscle loss - I wouldn't worry too much as it dosen't take too long to build up again.

I shoot anything from 30lb to 140lb quite regulary and have never needed to worry about building up to the big poundages but then again everyone is different.
