AFB Tips....

Hopefully my new Samick SLB II AFB, will be arriving today....

Any advice that might be usefull...either shooting the bow itself or making the arrows etc. Particularly aiming and hook...should I use a 1 above/2 under or 3 under hook??? should I anchor under my chin or draw more at eye level & sight along the arrow???

Also, am I right in thinking (from another thread), that there is no classification available for AFB's. What would be the situation if I entered a GNAS comp. using my AFB???

Cheers....

In terms of aiming, best is middle finger in the corner of the mouth, that has two purposes, first a consistent anchor and second gets the arrow closer to the eye. Canting (tilting) the bow also helps as this lines the arrow better with the eye also.

In terms of finger position, some people do use three under but thats personal preference, and depending on the way the bow has been made it may not be suitable for three under. Split finger is more than acceptable.

Aiming is normally point of aim using the tip of the arrow or instinctive. Depends what sort of shooting you will be doing, POA works fine for target but is much more difficult out in the woods on a field shoot as you have to be able to judge a distance. If you want to learn more about the instinctive method let me know and I can point you in the direction of some books.

My understanding is there is no classification for AFB, if you shot it at GNAS then it would be classed as a recurve.

Thanks for that....bit of a bugger about the GNAS classification thing - wouldn't like to shot AFB against a recurve in competition!!!

There needs to be a line drawn somewhere I suppose. Problem is with GNAS it's Longbow, Recurve, Compound and nothing in between.

However with NFAS there are so many and often even within that there are arguments as what a particular bow will fit in to.

My GNAS club are pretty good at allowing a few if us to shoot our AFB's, we don't shoot in competition with them but they don't turn their noses up just at the mere mention.

At my club, there are a couple of guys with mongolian style bows, and one ELB. During an internal comp, they would probably be lumped together in a Tradition category - suits me!!!

I thought barebow classifications were coming into effect in 2008? Would that not be of use?

Hi Darth

Congrats on your AFB purchase!

I think gilf has covered most of it really and that's how I am shooting my AFB. In GNAS Field you would fall under "recurve traditional" if you are using woodies. In GNAS target you would fall under "recurve" for classification purposes I believe as was said.

You must come out our way for a shoot sometime this winter.

Cheers

Brian
