does anyone do the old speed test that long bow men used to have to do?

i was wondering if any 1 dose the 10 arrows in a minet test any more, and how you do it. i now some of it,
1 you dont full draw
2 your hard wood in sets for your nock has a mm over lap on 1 side so you can feel it
3 arrows are in the ground but to hand.

1 thing i carnt figged out is how you pick up the arrow and turn over your hand to leave 4 secs to draw and loose

Yep: 12 (on boss) in 60 seconds. Would have shot more but didnt have any more arrows on me.


You do need to train to do it and a back quiver also helps (dont get on with ground quivers, keep knocking them over.)
I do full draw but use a simple 3 under and nock to side of mouth as its quicker.

Where I shoot we do a speed round, I can comfortably get 6 off in the 30 seconds we use as a time, using a side quiver and standard kit. The record is 8 in 30 seconds with a back quiver, I would imagine I'd be able to do 7 if I had 7 arrows.

My best using a side quiver is 22 arrows in one minute. I do come to full draw, and there is a video here in low res or here in high res You can see me shoot 5 arrows in 14 secs. (1:05 to 1:19)
The way I do this, by practising, no big secrets.

As Daniel says, just practise and you will get faster at shooting as you get used to your technique. I've never used a back quiver but I can shoot just as fast from a hip quiver as i can from having the arrows stuck in the ground.
I always come to full draw and surprisingly I get my best grouping at close range when I speed-shoot, mainly because I'm letting my muscles do the thinking for me...

I would imagine the speed test of old would have been as much about testing the archers strength as anything?
i.e. an archer can shoot the 140lb bow but can he shoot it 8 times in one minute without his draw coming down with each shot

so really to compare ourselves with medieval military archers we need to be drawing a bow which is on the limit of what we can manage (and dare I say drawing to the ear)

I have a 120lb bow which is about the most I can comfortably manage at the moment, I will give the speed shooting a try with this when I get a chance, should be fun/interesting :-)
