in a short booklet I have concering longbow making - the author says that you can use metal polish to polish the horn nocks once you've shaped them.

I would imagine the same would be ok for the horn slivers you have. Please note, I've not tried this myself - it's only what I've read.

If you fancy something a bit special - what about mother of peal?

Mother Of Pearl Blank Suppliers, Abalone Blank Suppliers, White Mother of Pearl Blanks, Solid White MOP Blanks, Inlay Shell Suppliers, Old Tortoise Shell, Alternative Ivory. - Mother Of Pearl

Cheers, Dave

Very fine (800grit) wet & dry, used wet followed up by T-Cut works a treat.

New Zealand paua (abalone) looks amazing and is available in chunks from bead shops, found in most towns, for a couple of quid per bag. My mad ex used to make jewellery from it, I used to drill 1/2 mm holes in it using a Dremel for the catches and hoops. Choose your baggie carefully and you will get several pieces suitable for an arrow pass.

You can use an oil stone to flatten the surface of a piece on one side before doing the fine polishing work with, erm, a ladies manicure set. You're a forester aren't you Teddybear? You might want your missus to do the shopping bit.
