AFB draw weight / cast

I shot a 40lb Viper Deluxe yesterday and got much better results than I can get with my recurve barebow. Really easy bow to shoot. I'm now pretty much sold on AFB in due course.

My question is this: the AFB has less cast than the recurve at a given draw weight. How much less? I'm looking in particular at the Viper, but also the SLB, Internature etc. For now I'm definitely looking at a roughly £100, so no Zetas or Merlins, alas.

Drawing 29-30", what kind of range will I be getting from a 40/50/60lb bow? How heavy would I need for outdoor target should I decide to go for it?

cheers

Dan

Dan, 40-45lbs is enough for any field archery course. If you need more range then use lighter arrows. I had a 35# Viper and could easily achieve standard clout ranges so it was enough for 80 yards on our field course. I shaved the limbs down, lightened the tips and fitted a 12 strand fastflite endless loop string and performance was noticeably better.

Thanks.

I guess 40-45 would shoot 100yds then? It's mainly target where I am, although I do want to try field.

I suspect that with modern deflex/reflex carbon AFB's the're prety close now! My Zeta was damn fast .... My new Zeta C will be too.

Never conclusively tested the cast/range ....... Lost to many arrows trying!

Sorry I just saw you can't stretch to that. ... I've no real experience with bows in that price range but if you can stretch your limit some it will be well worth it. You of course get what you pay for and your level of enjoyment increases with quality too. :-)

I would sugest around the 45# mark would be more than enough.
