truth or dogma

I recently knocked this one up. I was very short of time so i bashed this one out in 4 days fully expecting it to explode like its bretherin before it. being short of time i did'nt bther chasing to one ring or backing the bow. See below!

Now she has taken on a bit of set due to poor tillering but other than that after 500 plus arrow she still looks fine and shoots straight and faily fast considering.

Has anyone else ignored the one ring( insert your own jokes) rule with any success or is this just luck?

From what I've heard/seen following the growth ring isn't an absolute must, but it gives you a better chance of not having a bow that explodes! Anyway - good job on making this one, hope it holds up for you, what wood did you use for the bow? (I feel as if I should recognise it, but I can't really think what it is?)

Its ash disguised with rosewood wood dye and finished with Danish Oil. The handle is still not finished but i've run out of inspiration for now. I rushed the finish so its not as shiny as i would have liked.

Speaking as somebody who's never made a bow, is the cutout section a)high enough to allow feather clearance, and b)easy enough to do without leading to snapping issues?

Yes well spotted, the arrow shelf needs some rounding off on the belly side. I suffered some serious feather wear and tear, but easily fixable.
As for design is was pretty easy really. There are loads of American sites with great buildalong guides with clear photos. Some are better bowyers than others though. For your first go you want something prety simple,(unless your a carpenter or something!)
If your interested look at theseto get you going,

Ferret's Board Bow Instructions

John's HomePage

Trad Gang.com (tm): How To - Resources

These sites are very hunting orientated so if that offends be aware.
Be happy to give you the details of my one ( though i am sure there a better o copy)
