Breaking arrows

You make a nice new set of 12 arrows. You shoot them and get tuned in to them. Then the inevitable happens and you break one. Still 11 though. Then another one. But still got 10. And another one... at what point do you start getting worried you might not have enough to get through a shoot on a bad day? And do you make up a few more to complete the dozen again? Or make a fresh dozen altogether? And what do you do with all the part sets that build up?

Heh heh I know what you mean Steve, we were practising v-draws in the sports hall again last saturday (there's a wall behind the butts) and I broke one from a set of six, one from another set of six the week before. Most of us are breaking one or two a week at the moment. For most of us, these are the first arras we've made and it's distressing! Coach Bob warned us before this course "It's just ammunition" I think he missed the next line "Suffer the attrition"!
So now you have a half-dozen, plus spares.
Time to make up a new dozen I reckon

Cheers

ChrisM

I usually don't worry till I'm down to 8 left in the set, however, I did shoot one FITA last year where I started the day with ten arrows and finished with only three!!!

no serious breakages, but two missing piles, broken nocks and several fletches.

I once saw a very good Derbyshire longbow archer at the Golden Arrow in Nottingham, he had come along with only 9 arrows on a very windy day when lots of people were getting breakages and by the end he was down to 5 and still won it!

I get through a lot of arrows sometimes, the most frequent are those whose heads snap off when distance shooting or roving. What happens is that the head buries into the ground but the arrow still has a lot momentum so the tail flicks and hence the snap ( that energy has to go somewhere). The 'soultion' is to make slighty longer arrows and if the break is in the right place I fix another head and hey presto I get to use the arrow agian and it has the benifit of now being the right draw length!

i dont believe there is a thing called a full set of arrows, you buy 12 you end up with 11 in a matter of days,
why dont they sell arrows in Bakers dozens? at least that way we would have 12 for a while longer.
i usualy keep 6 for comps, 1 spare, and 7 others i practice with ( the older ones), 14 is the most ammount of arrows i have ever had at one time.

Showed up at the club last night with 12 fully functional arrows (4 of them nicely cresedted by myself on Monday night!!!).

Killed one, badly maimed another 2. The one that died, had previously broken at the point, so was shorter. I don't think it will be usable with another inch off it.

The other 2, were still full length, so they will be salvageable.

Breaking the woodies, doesn't really bother me since you can put together a full dozen for about £25. Its just the time it takes to treat the shafts etc.

One of the many delights of Field (especially unmarked) is just how many interesting ways there are in a woodland to lose/break arrows - even carbons!!
