I'd recommend either Boyton pine shafts or Sitka Spruce, Boyton pine can be bought from a lot of places, I find it really reliable and nice and strong. Sitka Spruce can be bought from Jason at the longbow shop, (The Longbow Shop - traditional longbow arrows and archery supplies) I've only used it once, but it seems to be very good.

Port Orford Cedar is also an option, but personally I prefer the other two.

Hi Ted

Port Orford Cedar is the recommended wood in our longbow classes which are run by Companions of the Longbow. It's easy to get hold of and easy to work. Arrow-making is highly addictive - be warned!

Cheers

Hi there - I am now an official UK dealer for Premium Sitka Spruce and also for Premium Port Orford Cedar shafts. There are charts on the website to help with spine selection but you need to take into account weight of point, draw length, bow measurement, feather length etc. Let me know more details and I'll help as much as I can

Cheers

Jason

This may or may not help...

I draw 53# at 28". Fastflight string, tab rather than glove. I use the pile as a draw length check.

My indoor arrows are 11/32" pine shafts from HiForce arrows (I can post a link to their website if you like, it can be tricky to find) spined at 53#. Fletchings are 5", the profile is a HiForce one called "Traditional Victorian", they are big! Piles are 160 grains from Archery Originals, their website is easy to find on google.

This set up suits my shot fine and I don't have to worry about aiming off, just look at the little + in the middle of the gold.

I have used Boyton pine shafts and they are very good. Sitka is very, very light, great for outdoors (but you need to watch the overall arrow weight, especially if shooting a lot of arrows and using a fastflight string), probably not necessary indoors.
