But, quite remarkably, some people seem to be actually defending the actions on display here...

Let me give you an analoge:

A man drives down the motorway - the wrong direction down the motorway...

But its fine, because hes an expert formula one driver - he's brilliant - so its fine...

People learn from mistakes - and the fact that its been quoted that this man never misses just tells me that its long overdue...

Do the consequences even bare thinking about?

you always seem to be looking for an argument. stick to your recurve (which you know about) and leave the trad alone(which you obviously don't know about).

We live in a society where someone, somewhere is always willing to tell us what's good for us, what we can do and what we can't do. It's just as well that there are people willing to push the envelope and give us a glimpse of what's possible when the do-gooders aren't looking

for once i think im with sam

i have no actual issue with archers arsing around like this in private (and indeed am probably guilty myself of the occasional 'risky' shot in fun) BUT to present this PUBLICLY as the fun face of archery might be seen as a little iffy

either way - maybe a mod should split this discussion off from the original thread ?

That's his decision Sam, not up to me to say anything to his wife and kids, or justify his actions. I am not his father, judge, jury, conscience or insurance company.

There are a hundred different extreme sports, each of which ensures that the participant is within seconds of death... I suppose you'd say all of those people are stupid, irresponsible, senseless, etc. etc. etc. Just because he's got a bow in his hand, doesn't mean he's got GNAS rules to abide by. Hell, he wasn't even in this country!

erm.. yes, probably!!

Look at all the 'dare devil' types... they wouldn't change their actions and their families live with it. 2 people immediately spring to mind... Steve Irwin & Richard Hammond, I'm sure Steve would do the same again if he could and the hammy said the same thing after his crash!

My biggest problem with this is that it's put on the video. There is no warning of how dangerous this is. It doesn't take too much imagination to work out what might happen if someone thinks that it's cool and tries to copy it. Fortunately the people who do this aren't likely to be able to shoot a bow heavy enough to do any real damage, but never the less I think that it's irresponsible to post the video, and it's not the face of archery that I want to see portrayed. No matter how good a shot the archer in question is

slight over reaction I think Sam!! Guns & knives etc are not banned... and what if they do fall under legislation - we are partially there ourselves having to belong to an organisation to be able to shoot. You will never stop the 'weapons' being in the wrong hands.... legislation or not!

And what happens when someone with no knowledge of archery decided that the consequences were too steep, and legislation is brought into archery?

You can't legislate for a car accident, or a snowboarding accident.

But you can ban a bow - its a weapon.
I'm getting worried, I'm agreeing with more and more of Sam's posts.

Absolutely right, we've seen more and more restrictive laws passed, banning this and that with the slightest excuse, and the last thing we need is a reason to ban archery, idiots copying this video could provide the excuse.

I think that you'll find that guns are banned, at least hand guns, and the fact that the criminals don't worry about law didn't stop the ban on sporting hand guns, nor the ban on "samurai" swords.
Pistol shooting being an Olympic sport didn't stop the government taking their guns away, what would stop them taking our bows? If the NSRA can't protect pistols, do you think that the GNAS can protect bows, if they come under attack?
