What Is Best Target Boss For Shooting With Bodkin Points?

Hey Guys

Which is the best boss..... Layered Foam or straw?

I currently shoot with a self yew longbow 35lb @ 30", with 31" ash arrows, with a 5/16 spine and 77g modbod points.

I know that straw bosses are widely used, but I'm aware that medieval bodkin points can really wear a start boss down quite easily, hence the reason why I'm thinking that a layered foam boss is better.

What do you guys think?

Thank you in advance

Willie

Either a straw boss or a layered foam boss will be fine I'd think, modbods don't damage targets like proper square bodkins do, they're made to be more "target friendly".

Foam bosses can always be re packed so they last longer, once straw bosses are knackered thats it...

Thank you guys, I really appreciate it

I had thought that a layered foam boss would be best, but I thought it would be best to ask, just to be sure

Thank you once again

Willie

I was ntv aware the the foam bossesould be re-packed. Do you have any info on who does that - just for future referance as I am about to get one for home use.

Thanks

Malcolm

You can repack the layed foams yourself. You need access to a banding machine used by packaging companies. I've begged one from the company over the road from me at work for my home boss, but our club has its own.

Thanks Ian, it's nicew to know how simple it really is to do this, I was envisaging that the boss had to be sent away.

By the way, do you find the SF sight to be relaible asd I am considering this as an option on the overall first equipment to be purchased in the next few weeks.

The SF riser and limbs are alo on the list as well as the Hoyt Nexus and Stratix limbs, but will be tring then out and looking for help from professions in due course.

Good shooting

Malcolm

Hi Malcom
The SF sight has been very reliable. I changed the sight pin for an adjustable iris but I've been very happy with the sight. It has a good range of adjustment, it is easy to set up, and above all is reasonably priced. My wife used to use an Arten sight but she too has got a SF the same as mine now.
As far as repacking the boss, two hands are better than one, take your time taking the boss apart, then spread the “shot out” part to the outside and the good parts to the centre. Try to keep the foam in line and bind up tight again. Took me about 45 mins

Thanks again Ian,

the SF sight seems to be good, so will be on the shortlist when I get to the shops.

Good shooting

Malcolm
