I agree with John, for lighter arrows you can't beat POC and it smells fantasitc. For bigger arrows you've got poplar, ash and birch which is my preference, tough as you like and flies very well but suffers from being rather doglegged to start with. Ash looks good but I've never got on with, probalby not suited to me and poplar is a good all round shaft and very easy to work.

Actually, Nick makes a very good point there, Poplar is a very easy wood to work and for that reason, it maybe the better one to practice your craft on.

Thanks Nick and JB

I have ash arrows at the moment and I'm just not 100% happy with them, especially since the grain keeps catching the fletching on other arrows when I shoot with close grouping, which is getting to be a bit annoying.

I was going to try very lightly sanding the arrow shafts, just to try and smoothen the grain a litte, but then this would be liable to weaken the spine to a small degree, and so I've opted not to try that

I'll give the POC shafts a try and see how they fly, but I'll also try out a fdew others and see what's what

Thank you guys once again for the advice and input, I really appreciate it

Willie

Hello

I'm using POC but this may well work with ash. Quick rub down with steel wool 0000 grade, then wipe over with a quick-dry varnish e.g. Ronseal satin, using a bit of kitchen tissue folded over 3 or 4 times. This lifts the grain nicely. A final rub with the steel wool leaves a finish smooth as a baby's bum. If you use a coloured varnish, you can see at a glance if you're taking too much off.

Cheers

Hi there

As with most trad archery stuff it's down to personal preference really

I'm an official UK dealer for both Rose City Premium POC shafts and also for Hildebrand premium Sitka Spruce shafts. Take a look at the site and let me know if I can help at all as I'm also a fletcher

The Longbow Shop - traditional longbow arrows and archery supplies

Cheers

Thank you Jason, I apreciate that very much and I'll most likely send you an e-mail sometime later or tomorrow morning as I was looking around on your website today for modbod points, as I currently have 77grain points, but I can't find anymore 77grain points anywhere, only 100grain and up

Thank you once again and I'll take another look on your site and see what arrows you got available

Willie

Hi Willie - we stock 5/16 70gn field points but the modbods only start at 100gn

I'm in the middle of discussions with some point manufacturers about a new line of modbod style point and may be looking at a 70gn version but that's all only at a discussion stage at the moment and these things can take months to sort out.

Cheers

Jase
