| I normally find I have a bit of shaft left in the pile. Holding the shaft with pliers or whatever, wave the pile in the flame of your gas cooker [you got electric, I can't help you] and after a few seconds with a pop the pile comes off, all nice and clean ready to be recycled.

Cooking with gas is how I get them off the shafts, but I find this leaves a bit of a residue inside, sometimes it comes off with something like a bradawl, sometimes not. It's the stubborn bits I'm after, usually right at the bottom of the taper on taper points.

| Using a drill bit which is a good fit in the pile should get it all out nicely (not the medical type of pile I have to point out ;-) I dont tend to worry about it on mine, just use heat to remove the old shaft and glue the next one in and I never have problems with the pile pulling off btw - I just use Wilkos cheap home brand epoxy glue |

| Surely this is good as it has 'keyed' up the surface and given the new glue something to grip onto?
