Hmm........lost my virginity tonight (I think)

I took receipt of my new 66lbs longbow last week and it's been hanging up waiting and waiting for me to loose some arrows. Finally tonight I managed to escape my chores grab my LB and arrows and get down the club and after arsing about with timber hitches, knocking points etc I finally get on the line, do one end at 80 yards, first arrow on my second end (arrow no 7) just about to loose and the darn bow explodes in my hands and sends the willies up everyone else :-)
Someone once said to me, you're a virgin at longbow til you've had one snap on you? So it's official, at thirty eight I've finally lost my cherry, ye hi!!
Bit of an expensive way of doing it though, thankfully the bowyer has quite happily agreed to make me another one.
Thinking about it, I s'pose the first time is the most memorable, no injuries either, bargain.

Name that bowyer only if for the making good on the bow exploding.

Did you work the bow in first? A little concerned that you took receipt of a new bow and had it sit around for a week. I have always heard tell of working a bow in, a few arrows not at full draw every day for a week or two slowly working up to full draw.

Yep highly recommended. I know that Pip Bickerstaffe and Steve Stratton both provide simple guidelines for doing this.

I won't name and shame, and yes I did work in it, warming her up nicely and slowly getting to full draw over a period of days but never got to fire an arrow til last night, nice whilst it lasted. No worries it's only wood at the end of the day, makes me realise why you need to take two LB's to competitions.

You are supposed to warm 'em up with a blow torch, yes?

I'm hoping that my piece of cable backed firewood doesn't snap or explode yet, well, not untill I can learn to shoot consistently first

In saying that, the cable backing is kinda handy, as the cable sorrounding will help prevent it from giving me a big slap on the bake, (Face) in the event that is does give way when at full draw, but hopefuly it won't as I have taken time to warm it up before even going to the club , but that in itself is no guarrantee that it won't snap

Cable backed? Heard of bamboo, hickory, sinew, but never cable! What sort? Did you make it? Pictures? Is it GNAS/BLBS/any other organisation legal for competition?
