English Yew Stave

Last week a good friend gave me this log. I have stripped it and split it and now it needs to dry. I hope to get 2 bows out of it (one each) I'm going to back it with hickory.

It looks good ,are there many knots which may cause problems?

That looks excellent JB, how long will you be leaving it to season? That'll be the one Gav gave you then (he was very impressed with your military arras!)?

Thanks for the replies.

Huffy- Yes, there are two flipin' great brances at the far end, but I have split it so that one stave mostly misses them which should give me about 82" to play with. While the other is about 66" to the two branches. Fortunately the friend who gave me the log shoots a bow of around 68" nock to nock, so I hope to get his bow out of this piece. I'll try and take a couple of pic's of these branches to show you what I mean.

Dave- Yep this is the log from Gavin and I reckon it's gonna need at least 8 months, but probably a bit longer to dry out.

dont wanna be the one to tell you this jb, but yew really should have the bark left on while its seasoning, otherwise the moisture will escape too quickly and the stave is likely to check. I would suggest maybe leaving it to dry somewhere cool, like an unheated garage or under a bench in a shed where its not going to get too much sun. It will take a lot longer to season, but it's better than ruining a nice stave!!!! best of luck with the bow!!!!!

Nice one John! What ring count has it got? A tasty bit of English yew produces a very tasty bow, saw a Al shooting his the other week, very nice indeed. Goes to show that English yew can be good if it's the right piece and I'll look foward to this one mate!
