It's out there somewhere!

OK, last season, with the very light arrows that were too near a dry loose for the bow's good, I could see the boss at 100 yards. This year that is not going to be possible. So, never mind what distance this relates to for you, how do you cope with lining up the shot when you can't see the boss? And what sort of strike rate are you getting? I am averaging about 1/6 scoring at 100 yards at the moment and need to improve this. At 80 I can only just see the boss, but am getting about 3/6 on. If I can find a consistent reference (not dependent on a handy tree on the skyline) I reckon I can better this, as I usually manage 10/12 on at 60. Handy hints much appreciated!

My technique is to use one of the knuckles of my bow hand - and put it on the target face - then move sideways to line up on target.

I have been working with this and find that I tend to come off the back as I move to set the line. My solution has been to pick something on the ground off to the side of the target and use a knuckle to line up on that, haven't really got that working properly yet, but feel it has potential.

shooting both longbow and barebow i find that with aiming i tend to use the same method with both.

that is to say that i start drawing up the bow while closing one eye and then put the arrow point on the base of the stand. After coming to rest I for a few seconds i move the arrow point up to my aiming point and move it to the left or right depending on the feel of the conditions and general experiance. This means that my hand and bow is covering the target but becuase i focus on the end of the arrow and use this as my aiming point it doesnt effect the shot at all. After holding it steady at the final aioming point i release as a normal shot so there are no repercussions on the stance and nearly dry losing as you mentioned

hope it helps slightly and if i havent explained it very well then just ask and i will try again

If you don't have anything behind the bosses to aim at then I would find something you can sit in the gap between knuckles and aim with that. Maybe a boss on the left hand side. The knuckle itself I recon would be a bit too big to get a precise aim.

If you come off the back as you aim this is a form issue you really do need to work on rigorously, especially that you shoot longbow.
isn't that fine for shooting at your club but when going elsewhere then said tree or other aiming points wouldn't be there.

just my thoughts as with my mongolian i'm trying to "visually measure" the distance from my grip for different distances if you know what i mean.

I was experimenting with knuckles in the back garden and found that the gap between two knuckles seemed to work better than the actual joint, probably just a personal thing. I am in a slump with my actual form at the moment, not sure whether this is caused by, or has caused, the problems the chiropractor has rather painfully worked on. Hopeful of picking up again if I can shoot tomorrow, now I understand the way the body has reacted.
