Logbow classifications (indoor)?

Our club has an internal achievement award scheme, where we give colours awards for different levels of shooting ability. At the moment, we award on the basis of portsmouth scores, because we mostly shoot indoors and no-one shoots anything else.

This is all done for recurves, but this year we have a lot of longbows in the club.

Since GNAS don't publish classifications for longbow, indoor (?), does anyone have any idea how we could work out equivalent longbow scores, from our recurve levels?

Since you seem to imply it is just for recognizing progress, perhaps you could take a look at using the Portsmouth score badges that Reading Archers make and sell. The longbowers will possibly be in the lower scores, but they are banded in 25s I think all the way from about 300.

Murray has also posted ideas on making badges for progress. A quick search in the threads should pull this up.

If you still want to try and work out equivalent to the GNAS A-G classifications for longbow, you could probably do it in Excel by comparing the outdoor longbow classification with recurve to get a roungh handicap equivalent, and then doing a simlar graph for indoors and reading off the longbow class against the recurve Handicap equivalent.....easier to do than explain I think. Don't have time to do it now, but if you really want to go this route and get stuck, drop me a PM, and I will see what I can rustle up.

Yes, it's just for tracking progress. For recurves the levels are roughly 450, 500, 520, 540, 555, 570 portsmouths, which fit ok to our clubs usual cross-section of ability.

We also have our own badges, it's just an issue of knowing what's a fair equivalent longbow score; we have a peculiarly high number of longbowers this year and haven't really had to worry about it before now

I will have a look at outdoor classifications, try and work out an equivalence.

I just did a rough plot based on Gents Recurve and longbow outdoor, and took the scores you mention below

I get

Recurve Rough HC LB HC Score
450 ------ 55 ---------- 72 ------ 292
500 ------ 47 ---------- 67 ------ 349
520 ------ 43 ---------- 64 ------ 380
540 ------ 37 ---------- 61 ------ 407
555 ------ 33 ---------- 58 ------ 432
570 ------ 27 ---------- 54 ------ 460

These are as I said rough eye-ball jobs.

I've got a copy of the updated classifications with me but unless I'm missing something they've only provided longbow classifications for outdoor rounds. We're a university club with no outdoor range so we have to stick to indoor rounds.

Have they updated handicap tables at the same time? I don't have the most recent copy of those, just the rules of shooting.
