Pretty arrows

Does anyone have any tips on dipping arrows so that the part of the shaft nearest the nock is coloured rather than wood? I would like to make a really nice indoor set for the winter and think white would set off the fletching colours well. Spending money on things like proper dipping tubes is not an option! Does just painting the shaft work? If so, what paints work best/worst? Are there any issues gluing fletchings onto paint (I usually fletch to bare untreated wood as I believe I get a better bond this way). All advice, or links to relevant websites, appreciated!

Why not get some wraps made by someone like Onestringer, (in white) and you could then incorporate your own design/name/number into the arrow too. Saves the hassle of painting.

I've used their wraps many times, on carbon, ally and wooden arrows, and can highly recommend them

Hi there

I tend to either dip or I also spray paint the crown using acrylic spray cans.
  1. Seal the shafts first
  2. Mark where you want the crown dips to end
  3. Wrap masking tape around the shaft up to the marked point for about 2 inches leading up to it.
  4. Wrap newspaper around the rest of the shaft to avoid any overspray
  5. Turn the shaft as you're spraying and spray around 3 light coats sanding inbetween the first 2 with 0000 wire wool.

Here's a quick diagram as well that I've knocked up

Looks interesting, will check it out properly tomorrow, only question is whether thery will work on rear tapered arrows?

A suggestion somebody gave me on Wednesday at the midsummer shoot (wind, rain, depressing clouds... English summer!) was to use white primer, fletch onto that and then varnish. Anyone tried this?

Am experimenting in the shed with old shafts... old satin gloss paint is showing some promise, even applied with a brush rather than dipped. If the weather is nasty I may have a finished prototype to post pictures of by the end of Sunday.
