Well I fed gibbon (fish and chips) and he took me to B&Q, I now own 4ft of pipe and 4 meters of 10mm shock cord.

It's currently at 45lbs and that's fine for me right now, I'll work on this over time and when this becomes easy i'll have to buy some more cord.

Me proving its about 45lbs (ish):

Cheers again gwyn.

Some general conditioning points; if you're aiming to develop strength you would look to do 3 sets of 6 to 8 repetitions with quite a heavy weight (the last rep or two would be an effort, but you would be able to maintain the correct form for the exercise), the body also needs time to recover in between sessions. Don't be tempted to increase the amount of work done by more than 10% steps. Remember that the muscles also need stretching or they will shorten and become less mobile and more prone to injury. I have found it useful to work on stretches for the chest as well; I think the way this works is that if the chest opens easily then the effort of the back muscles is going into the bow, rather than stretching the chest muscles. If in any doubt seek advice from a qualified fitness instructor at a gym or a qualified archery coach. If it's hard work that's fine, if it hurts STOP! Good luck!

Pumping iron

You could build up strength just by drawing bow without an arrow, hold the draw for 2 or 3 times longer than usual, then let down slowly.Repeat for as long as you are comfortable with That is totally free.I have been reading the book ,Archery Strong, which i got from Quicks for £12.50.It describes a 30 minute, once a week training program from a qualified instructor. It looks impressive but i am still recuperating from an accident at work 6 weeks ago so I have not been able to try it out

Doesn't seem fair does it? I once shot a western quite happily, got into the car to go home and put a rib out pulling the handbrake! And I felt so silly explaining to the chiropractor how I had done it!
