| RE: Advice please Arrow spine for longbows is a far from exact science. I start with the arrows rated at 2/3 the bow's draw wieght for a 28" arrow, make them up and see how they fly. If they come out wrong, adjust the spine for the next lot. The problem is that being made of natuaral materials every bow shoots differently and what will work with one 50lb bow won't work with another. I would start with 40/45lb shafts with 100grn piles for your set up, make up half a doz and see how they go. Daniel |

| Cliveanne, Here's a link to How to make a Flemish Twist Bowstring. http://www3.sympatico.ca/ragiwarmbea...h/flemish.html Made up a jig myself and it works fine. Recommend using 2 or 3 colours, as it can get confusing laying the loops, unless you mark the individual twists with a marker pen. Hope this helps. Mick

See Incomplete Longbow website Selecting the spine of your arrows The values of spines are given in pounds for a 26 shaft suitable for a recurve bow. Hilary Greenland recommends that you select arrows which are spined for two thirds or three quarters of the actual draw weight of your bow at your draw length. Quicks have provided a table based on the draw weight of the bow with values for different arrow lengths (nock to pile) from which the following is an extract: Longbow/arrow length ................. 24" .... 26" .... 28" .... 30" .... 32" 30-38lbs - 20/25 25/30 30/35 35/40 - 38-45lbs - 20/25 25/30 30/35 35/40 40/45 45-53lbs - 25/30 30/35 35/40 40/45 45/50 53-60lbs - 30/35 35/40 40/45 45/50 50/55 60-68lbs - 35/40 40/45 45/50 50/55 55/60 The values of the spines are given in ranges of 5lbs as this is the usual accuracy at which they are sold. So if you were hoping to make a set of a dozen arrows between 34-36lbs, you will need to buy two dozen shafts! |
