| FITA 25m Shoot Next Sunday Castle Archers are putting on a FITA 25 next Sunday, 24 Feb 2008. 5 doz arrows at 25m to a 60cm face. Originally intended as a small shoot for archers in the local Dyfed area, there are apparently a couple of spaces left in both sessions. I have been given permission by Castle (who are not my club) to announce it here. If you'd like to shoot you need to know the following:

| Very confused! Isnt a FITA 25 an indoor round? How can there be a limited overshoot that affects compounds? Is the netting close to the back wall or something? What is a compound doing missing at 25m anyway. I have been to shoots where there is NO backstop netting - miss at your peril. Is this the first of many shoots to BAN COMPOUNDS ![]() ![]() ![]() Quote:

That said... Newcastle Emlyn leisure centre is big enough to hold a 25m indoor shoot, but only just. Backstop netting will be used, but it will be only a matter of inches away from the wall. This is because of the way the hall is laid out, and is beyond the control of Castle Archers. The bosses kept at Newcastle Emlyn are foam rather than pressed straw. A pass-through from a 60lb bow could possibly end up with the point of an arrow impacting on the wall behind, resulting in complaints from the archer that the venue is unsuitable for compound bows. Having seen plenty of pass-throughs at 30m and over from fast high poundage bows, I agree that there is a risk of damage to arrows in the hall concerned, and I fully understand the reasons that the organisers have issued the warning. Low poundage bows from which arrows are unlikely to pass through the boss are not a problem - and this includes compounds. The organisers are NOT banning compounds per se: to do so would prevent people such as my 10-year old son from shooting his massive (OK, it's actually rather sweet) 12lb compound bow - and that is definitely not the intention. On the other hand, if you (for example) go along to shoot with a 50lb bow, and get several pass-throughs (or misses... ) you might be justified in requesting some sort of explanation for the damage caused to arrows. It may be possible to borrow a couple of 'nappies' for the backs of vulnerable bosses, but that's something that hasn't yet been finalised. It's worth bearing in mind too, that this shoot started life only a few weeks ago as a club-and-invited-guests tournament. Opening it up to other interested archers has been a last-minute decision by the organisers. Howzat?

It's basically as Fran said: The hall measures 37m end-to-end, ergo to get 25m in the bosses will be about 1m from the end wall. behind the bosses there will be a backstop net, but thin arrows go through those. Pass-throughs should not be an issue in any case: we have one archer shooting a 60lb compound and with indoor [S]scaffold poles[/S] arrows there isn't a problem. Wot, no strikethrough? bah! [S] is supposed to make strikethrough letters with a line through them... and lastly, we have no intention of banning compounds. The wording was wrong, we admit that, the person responsible has been asked not to do it again ![]() If any of you do want to come and play, I need entries by email by wednesday, please. GNAS only, number in entry or failing that bring your card on the day. No GNAS number, no shoot. Sorry, I don't make that rule. Currently, there is no morning session - if I get another 8 entries I will have to run the morning session (albeit with not many in it) and then there will be about 8 places left in the afternoon. Currently, the few who requested morning are in the afternoon list, and space for up to 7 more. | |||||||||||

| Well, there must have been a whole load of entries, because there were indeed two sessions, and I shot in both! A PB in the morning, and then another one in the afternoon. Yay! The whole day was expertly organised by Castle; the staff of the leisure centre were helpful and friendly - and the apres-shoot drinkies in a localish hostelry most welcome after a hard day's shoot. Thanks Castle, and well done.
